The children are the spirit of this mission. To see a smile on a child’s face when we walk into the Recovery Ward, to hear that sweet laugh when we play catch or tickle them, that is why we come. To sit with the worried parents in the PACU after their child’s surgery is over, hold their hand and comfort them, that is why we come. The children bring laughter and hope to our days. Though it is tiring to get up before the sun does and work into the evening, to know that our actions and dedication will change the life of one child, that is why we come. Some days the tiredness and simple frustrations blind us from our mission but the blindness is quickly lifted when we see a child we have helped. We are constantly thanked by most everyone we see, it is hard to turn a corner or walk down a hallway without being greeted by a smile and a handshake or wave.
