On the pre-operation department of our Rotaplast mission in Sylhet, there is an exceptionally colorful and cheerful atmosphere every day. This vibrant atmosphere is a deliberate choice to provide distraction and relaxation to the patients who have been fasting for hours. The colorful environment and the positive attitude of everyone greatly help to reduce the patients’ nerves before they enter the operating room.
Besides the medical procedures, education is a crucial part of our mission, aimed at achieving sustainable improvement and knowledge transfer. Young medical professionals have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience directly in the operating rooms and on the nursing wards, and receive training in technical skills. Training sessions on communication and decision-making also take place, as part of our special Global Scholar Program. Today, I attended a ‘post-conference’ session that focused on open communication about patient statuses and daily operations. These sessions promote mutual trust and ensure better information transfer, which is crucial for the quality of our care.
Karen Davis, responsible for the Rotaplast Global Scholar Program, receives much praise from participants. The results are noticeable: the gap between physicians and the alignment on patient status and expectations is getting narrower.
The day was made complete by the visit of the ladies from InnerWheel Sylhet. They showed great interest in the progress of our mission and brought toys for the children on the pre-op department. Their involvement and support are heartwarming and underline the connectivity that is so characteristic of our missions.
Days like this reaffirm why we do what we do: changing lives, one operation at a time, while simultaneously investing in the future of local medical professionals.
