Today marked the final day of our Rotaplast mission in Sylhet, Bangladesh, a day filled with completion and heartfelt farewells. The morning was dedicated to the post-clinic, where all patients were invited for one last check-up by our surgical team. Not everyone could attend; some live hours away and had been operated on earlier in the mission.
However, the post-clinic offered us the opportunity to see once more the smiles that our interventions have brought to those who were there. These are the moments that make our work so special; the direct visible results of our efforts. Under the leadership of Medical Director Hootan, an impromptu shoe market was even organized, which was chaotic but incredibly fun. All patients were allowed to ‘shop for free,’ which brought many cheerful faces.
While the post-clinic was underway, our quartermaster Nico was busy coordinating the packing of materials and equipment. Everything had to be prepared for transport back to America for future missions. He was supported by the rest of the team. The operating rooms and wards were tidied up, and materials that did not need to be returned, such as bandages and some medicines, were donated to the local hospital and community.
In the evening, we bid farewell to everyone involved in this impressive mission. We thanked the management of the Sylhet Women’s Medical College, the local students and doctors, our friends from the Rotary Club Jalalabad, and the Rotaracters of Sylhet. Thanks to their commitment and hospitality, we were able to make such a significant impact on the community here.
With one last look at the smiling faces and knowing that we have left behind something priceless—a smile that changes lives—we concluded the mission. See you again and thanks to everyone! 🙏💖
