At the heart of every Rotaplast surgical trip are individuals whose passion, leadership, and compassion help transform the lives of children around the world. Among those who have shaped and carried forward Rotaplast’s legacy of service are two inspiring pioneers: Ted Alex and Tom Fox. Their journeys are reminders of what it truly means to serve others — not just with skills, but with heart.
Ted Alex: Answering the Call, One Mission at a Time
Ted Alex joined Rotaplast in 2007, not knowing then that it would become such a meaningful part of his life. With 18 missions under his belt — including five as a Mission Director — Ted brings dedication and humility to every role he steps into. “It’s an honor every time I’m asked to join a mission,” he says. For him, Rotaplast is the embodiment of giving back: changing children’s lives, easing families’ burdens, and providing hope for a brighter future.
Ted’s passion stems from a profound moment on his very first mission to Peru. He wasn’t in a medical role and had no idea what to expect. But once he witnessed the Rotaplast team come together — working seamlessly to restore smiles and change lives — he was moved. “I knew immediately that Rotaplast was something special… something bigger than all of us,” he reflects.
What drives Ted is more than the surgeries; it’s the long-term impact — ending the stigma, preventing bullying, and offering children the chance to live freely and joyfully. “Rotaplast is what giving back to children means,” he says. And with each mission, his gratitude only grows. “I’m very grateful to be part of Rotaplast!”
Tom Fox: Service Above Self, Around the Globe
A proud Rotarian and past president of the Rotary Club of Pleasanton, Tom Fox is a true cornerstone of Rotaplast. Since joining in 2002, he has participated in an astounding 43 missions — and led an impressive 36 of them as Mission Director. His leadership, generosity, and vision have touched lives across continents.
Tom’s first mission was as a quartermaster, serving alongside fellow mission leader Evelyn Abad. That experience set the tone for what would become a lifelong commitment. For Tom, every mission offers the chance to witness transformation in real time. “Watching lives — mostly young ones — change dramatically in a short period of time is something truly special,” he says.
But what stands out even more to Tom is the ripple effect. He cherishes the opportunity to work with Rotarians around the world, witnessing how local communities embody “Service Above Self” and create real, lasting change. Rotaplast not only heals patients — it builds global bridges of compassion and service.
When asked to name a favorite mission, Tom’s answer is always the same: “The last one.” It’s a testament to his belief that each mission carries its own meaning.
Carrying the Torch of Compassion
Ted and Tom’s stories serve as a powerful reminder of the heart behind Rotaplast. They represent the spirit of selflessness and service that defines every mission. Whether in their first mission or their fourteenth, they continue to show up—not for recognition, but for the joy of giving children a brighter future.
As we celebrate the work of these pioneers, we are reminded that real change comes from people who care deeply, act boldly, and serve humbly. Thank you, Ted and Tom, for leading by example and inspiring us all.
