Each day there is a a process to ensure that patients get safe surgery. Below find photos and text that lead you through what each patient and their family experience as they work through our clinic.

Everything starts in the Pre Op Ward

Meaghan Murphy plays with and comforts patients before surgery

As you can imagine, patients and their families are tense before surgery. Meaghan’s kind smile goes a long way to sooth all.

From the Ward to the Operating Room

Anesthesiologist Shannon Bianchi brings a patient from the ward into the OR

Patients receive one last work up, to ensure that they are safe candidates for surgery and we get to it!
Anesthesia then surgery.

From the OR to the PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit)

After surgery patients come to the PACU to come out of anesthesia before being transferred to the post op ward.

PACU Nurses Judith Weinstein-Ruben and Ellen Adams pose with two talented and helpful Global Scholar Students from the teaching hospital AIMS where we are working.

Letting patients rest after surgery is very important! We give each patient a quilt from wrap-a-smile. This one is beautiful.

A mother wipes away her tears as she is reunited with her child in the PACU after surgery. There are often intense moments as patients are reunited with families and loved ones.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration & Communication

As mentioned in a past blog we have a multidisciplinary team! Surgeons, anesthesiologists, GP/Pediatricians, OR Nurses, PACU Nurses, Dentist, and a Burn therapist. We also have all the non-medical volunteers required to ensure the patients and their families are comfortable, informed, and have a point of contact at all times.

Surgeons Gary Salomon and Rod Simonds speak with the brother of a burn scar patient to share how the surgery went. Our local partners at AIMS are fantastic and amazing collaborators. Thank you for assisting with translations and for being so hospitable!

Aaron Woolman, RN, is our global scholars education coordinator. Here he is with PACU Nurse Ellen Adams, PACU Assistant Lisa Cohen and some of the wonderful scholars who are working, learning, and contributing to our education and surgery program.
