Brothers, Mafiz 3 years old and Hatiz 5 years old were both born with a cleft lip. They live in Islambur, a village of 80 families about four hours away. One day, a village official contacted their family informing them that Rotaplast was coming to Sylhet offering free surgery. Mafiza, their mother and Azizzunssa, the boys’ maternal aunt took the boys and traveled more than four hours, half way by bus then by an auto rickshaw. “It’s a social stigma here to have this deformity,” said Mafiza. “Other children make fun of them and they cry. With the surgery, I will be able to send the boys to school. They will have a better life.” Both brothers will have surgery today.
