During our medical mission in Sylhet, the pre-operation, recovery (PACU), and post-operation nursing departments play essential roles. Every morning, our doctors make rounds on the pre- and post-operation wards to assess the patients’ current health status and suitability for surgery. Patients with colds, fever, or other complications are sometimes deemed unfit for surgery due to the risk of further complications, although this is fortunately not very common.

In the pre-operation department, each patient is carefully evaluated to determine if they are fit enough for surgery. This evaluation is crucial to avoid unnecessary risks during and after the procedure.

The post-operation nursing department focuses on patient recovery. Many patients stay one or two nights, depending on their recovery process, and some are able to go home after their stay. All patients who go home are expected back on the designated ‘return day’ for further evaluation.

The PACU or recovery department sees patients for the shortest duration. Here, patients recover from the surgery and anesthesia. Once they are awake enough and can drink, they are transferred to the post-operation ward.

Our dedication and the caring approach of our nursing departments ensure that each patient has the best possible chance for a successful recovery. This kind of work is why we do what we do, driven by a passion to change lives for the better.

A special moment today was the visit from Mst. Taskia Akter, a former patient who now volunteers with us. Years ago, she underwent a life-changing operation on her feet, which greatly improved her mobility. Talk about impact?! Out of gratitude and awareness of the impact such surgeries have, she is passionately helping others. Her presence and dedication are a grand gesture and a great inspiration for both patients and staff.

The Rotary Club of Jalalabad supports us throughout the mission. We are extremely grateful for their dedicated contribution. Mission Director Randall Floyd, Quartermaster Nico Wissing, and Mission Historian Ruben Veldman are attending their official meeting.
