Early Start
When we’re on mission, the days begin early. From now on, “6:30 sharp” is the call almost every morning. With the full team divided over three minibuses, we make the trip to the hospital in just over 30 minutes—traffic permitting. Inside the buses, the mood is upbeat and positive. You can feel the excitement and energy as everyone gears up to begin the real work.

A Warm Welcome 🧡
Upon arrival at the hospital, we are immediately greeted with warmth by the Rotarians, Rotaractors, hospital staff, and our indispensable interpreters. The welcoming ceremony is a powerful reminder that this mission is truly a joint effort. Rotaplast is not here alone—our shared commitment is what makes the impact of this mission so meaningful.

A Moment of Pride 🌟
As we walk across the hospital grounds, decorations and banners from previous Rotaplast missions immediately catch our eye. Among all the images of collaboration and impact, we spot a familiar face: our dedicated surgeon George Gamil from Egypt. For many years, he has volunteered his time and expertise to Rotaplast, standing—both literally and figuratively—among the missions that have changed lives. It is a beautiful and well-deserved tribute to his commitment.
Pssst… George isn’t one to seek the spotlight or stand on a stage—but this time, we couldn’t resist taking the moment. Well done, George!
Adding to the special feeling: the team photo taken just yesterday is already displayed on a banner. It’s incredibly moving to see what he—and what we together with Rotaplast, Rotary, and Rotaract—have built over the years. A tangible symbol of lasting impact. 💙

Essential Links 🌍
The interpreters and Rotaractors play a vital role. Many of the children, parents, and young adults who need our help cannot easily communicate in English. Thanks to these volunteers, stories, concerns, and hopes are translated—selflessly, with great care and accuracy. The experience they gain stays with them for life and shapes how they view healthcare and supporting others.

Pre-Clinic: Teamwork in Action 🩺
Today is fully dedicated to the pre-clinic, setting up the operating rooms, and organizing the supply storage—the home base of Quartermaster Gerard. All patients are registered, examined, selected, and scheduled for the coming days. It’s a massive undertaking that demands tight coordination and teamwork. The seasoned professionals quickly find their rhythm, working steadily to ensure that every single patient is truly seen.

Patience and Trust 👨👩👧👦
Even before registration begins, a large group of people is already waiting patiently. For them, it’s reassuring to know they will be seen and that their journey here has not been in vain—especially since some have traveled a great distance to be here today. Their patience is rewarded: by the end of this intense day, the results are clear. In just seven hours, an impressive 127 patients have been registered and examined. A remarkable achievement.

The Schedule: A Medical Puzzle 🧩
The next step is creating a realistic schedule for the first day of surgery. The surgeons estimate the time needed for each procedure, after which Jodelle (Head Nurse) and Ard (Medical Records) take on the challenge of assembling the puzzle. And it is no small task. They work well into the evening to build a careful, well-thought-out schedule. As a team, we have great respect for their dedication and commitment.

Ready to Begin 💪
Tomorrow is prepared. The starting signal for the “medical marathon” has been given. We’re ready. 💙
